Ulster County is one of the original twelve counties established in the Province of New York in 1683. Its name derives from the Ulster province of Ireland, a nod to the English colonial administration of the era. From its earliest days, the county was shaped by the confluence of Dutch, English, and Lenape cultures along the western banks of the Hudson River, leaving a lasting imprint on the architecture, place names, and traditions that survive to this day.
Kingston — then known as Esopus, and later Wiltwyck — played an outsized role in the founding of New York State. In 1777, delegates convened in Kingston to draft the first New York State Constitution, making Kingston the state's first capital. The 19th century brought the discovery of Rosendale natural cement — a hydraulite cement so durable it was used in the construction of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the U.S. Capitol.
