"Our LG washer stopped draining in the middle of a cycle. Called Mid Hudson on a Tuesday morning and they had a technician at our Woodstock home by early afternoon. The repair was done in under an hour and the price was fair. So relieved not to have to haul laundry to town for weeks."

Ulster County at a Glance
A Brief History of Ulster County, NY
Ulster County is one of the original twelve counties established in the Province of New York in 1683. Its name derives from the Ulster province of Ireland, a nod to the English colonial administration of the era. From its earliest days, the county was shaped by the confluence of Dutch, English, and Lenape cultures along the western banks of the Hudson River, leaving a lasting imprint on the architecture, place names, and traditions that survive to this day.
Kingston — then known as Esopus, and later Wiltwyck — played an outsized role in the founding of New York State. In 1777, delegates convened in Kingston to draft the first New York State Constitution, making Kingston the state's first capital. The British burned the city just months later in retaliation, but Kingston was rebuilt and went on to become one of the Hudson Valley's most important commercial and manufacturing centers through the 19th century. The Kingston Stockade District, with its surviving Dutch stone houses, remains one of the oldest and best-preserved historic districts in New York.
The 19th century brought the discovery of Rosendale natural cement — a hydraulite cement so durable it was used in the construction of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the U.S. Capitol. The Rosendale cement industry transformed the mid-Hudson region's economy and left behind a remarkable legacy of mines and kilns that are now celebrated as industrial heritage. Meanwhile, the county's fertile Hudson Valley soils nurtured a thriving farm culture that continues today, with garlic festivals, orchards, and farm stands drawing visitors throughout the region.
In the 20th century, Ulster County became synonymous with American counterculture and the arts. The town of Woodstock had been an arts colony since the early 1900s, but it gained worldwide fame as the namesake of the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival (held nearby in Bethel, Sullivan County). Today, Ulster County is home to a vibrant mix of artists, outdoor enthusiasts, historic preservationists, and working farms — all served by the same small-town infrastructure that makes appliance repair both essential and personal.

Ulster County's natural cement industry shaped 19th-century America. Rosendale cement — quarried from the limestone ridge along Route 213 — was used in the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, and the U.S. Capitol. The Rosendale Trestle and Century House Historical Society preserve this remarkable industrial legacy.
