New Paltz Through the Years

From Huguenot refugee founders to a major state university, New Paltz's history is as layered as its geology — with centuries of stories embedded in its stone buildings, climbing cliffs, and creek-side streets.

1677
Huguenot Founders Arrive
Twelve Huguenot families — Protestant refugees fleeing persecution in France and the Palatinate — purchased land from the Esopus Lenape and founded New Paltz. They named it after their homeland: the Pfalz (Palatinate) region of Germany.
1692–1720s
Huguenot Street Stone Houses Built
The founders built their stone houses along what is now Huguenot Street — a row of original dwellings that still stand today. The street is one of the oldest continuously inhabited European-settler streets in the United States.
1828
New Paltz Academy Founded
New Paltz Academy was established, eventually evolving into the New Paltz State Normal School and later into SUNY New Paltz — today a major university with over 7,000 students and a significant cultural presence in the community.
1935–Present
The Gunks Become a Climbing Mecca
Fritz Wiessner first climbed the Shawangunk Ridge in 1935, opening a new era of rock climbing. The Gunks — with their unique horizontal quartz conglomerate ledges — became the most important rock climbing area in the eastern US, drawing climbers from around the world.

New Paltz's Famous Landmarks

Huguenot Street

One of the oldest streets in America with original buildings still standing. The six stone houses built by Huguenot founders in the early 1700s are a National Historic Landmark and an open-air museum of early American history.

Shawangunk Ridge (The Gunks)

The Shawangunk Ridge is among the most important rock climbing areas in North America. The unique quartz conglomerate cliffs of the Gunks rise dramatically west of New Paltz, hosting thousands of climbers each season.

Mohonk Mountain House

The legendary Victorian resort on a Shawangunk ridge-top lake has operated continuously since 1869. Mohonk Mountain House is a National Historic Landmark and one of the most distinctive hotels in the country.

SUNY New Paltz Campus

SUNY New Paltz brings thousands of students and cultural energy to the community. The campus's Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art is a respected regional institution, and the university's presence shapes New Paltz's vibrant downtown scene.
