A Brief History of Orange County, NY

Orange County is one of the original twelve counties established in the Province of New York in 1683, when it was carved out of what had previously been a single vast administrative territory. Its name honors King William III of England, Prince of Orange, whose Protestant rule was celebrated by Dutch and English settlers alike in this part of the Hudson Valley.

The county played an outsized role in the American Revolution. George Washington established his headquarters in Newburgh in 1782–1783 — the longest continuous encampment of his entire command — and it was here that he quelled a potential military coup and awaited the final peace with Britain. The Hasbrouck House, Washington's headquarters in Newburgh, still stands and is the oldest publicly owned historic site in the United States.

Throughout the 19th century, Orange County became one of New York's most productive agricultural counties, famous for its dairy farms, onion fields (especially in the Black Dirt Region around Pine Island), and apple orchards. The region remains agriculturally active today, and its farm stands, pick-your-own orchards, and wineries draw visitors from across the tri-state area.

The 20th century brought industry, suburban growth, and landmark institutions — from the establishment of the United States Military Academy at West Point (the oldest continuously occupied military post in America) to the opening of Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, one of the highest-grossing outlet centers in the world. Today, Orange County balances its rural heritage with thriving suburban communities and is one of the fastest-growing counties in New York State.
