A Brief History of the Town of Minisink, NY

Minisink is one of Orange County's oldest towns, established in 1788 as one of the original townships when Orange County was divided. Its name derives from the Lenape word "Minisink" — the name the indigenous people gave to the lands along the Delaware River valley, meaning approximately "the place where the waters are gone" or "the stony country."

The town's darkest day came on July 22, 1779, during the Revolutionary War. A band of Mohawk warriors and Loyalist rangers led by the Mohawk war chief Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea) raided the settlement of Minisink, burning farms and taking captives. Local militia members from throughout the region hastily assembled and pursued Brant's force, but were ambushed near Minisink Ford. The resulting Battle of Minisink left 44 American militiamen dead — one of the most devastating defeats of the Revolutionary War's frontier conflict.

The battle site remained unclaimed and unmarked for 43 years, until a gruesome discovery of the fallen soldiers' remains prompted a proper burial and commemoration in 1822. Today, Minisink Battleground County Park preserves the site as a place of historical memory and quiet reflection. The town has remained primarily agricultural ever since, its rolling fields and woodlands largely unchanged from the landscape that Revolutionary-era settlers knew.

What Minisink Is Known For

A town with deep Revolutionary War roots, rural character, and a proud agricultural identity stretching back to the 18th century.

Battle of Minisink (1779)

On July 22, 1779, 44 American militiamen were killed in an ambush near Minisink Ford — one of the deadliest engagements of the Revolutionary War's frontier conflict. The battle site lay unmarked for 43 years before the fallen were given a proper burial and monument.

Minisink Battleground County Park

Orange County maintains this quiet, wooded park at the site of the 1779 battle. Trails wind through the forest where the ambush occurred, and interpretive markers tell the story of the conflict and the men who died there.

Rural Farming Character

Minisink has remained an agricultural community for over two centuries. Rolling fields, family farms, and open countryside characterize a town that has largely resisted the suburban sprawl affecting much of Orange County.

New Jersey Border Country

Minisink sits at the southwestern edge of Orange County, bordering New Jersey and the Delaware River valley. This geography gives the town a distinct character — closer in spirit to the Delaware Valley than to the Hudson Valley proper.
