Rockland County at a Glance
A Brief History of Rockland County, NY
Rockland County was formed in 1798 when it was carved out of the southern portion of Orange County, reflecting the rapid growth of settlements along the western bank of the Hudson River. The region had long been home to the Lenape people before European settlement, and the area's strategic position between the Hudson River and the Ramapo Mountains made it an important crossroads during the colonial era. The county's name derives from the rocky terrain that characterizes much of its landscape.
During the American Revolution, Rockland County was the scene of one of the most dramatic episodes of the entire war. In 1780, British Major John Andre was captured near Tarrytown after meeting secretly with the traitor Benedict Arnold. Andre was tried and executed in Tappan, a hamlet in Orangetown, in an event that sent shockwaves through both the American and British commands. The DeWint House in Tappan, where George Washington stayed during the Andre affair, still stands as a historic landmark.
Throughout the 19th century, Rockland County developed as a river trade and industrial hub. The brickyards along the Hudson — particularly in Haverstraw — became some of the most productive in the nation, supplying the brick that built much of New York City. The Palisades cliffs along the county's eastern edge were once threatened by quarrying operations before a landmark preservation campaign in the early 1900s saved them, eventually leading to the creation of Palisades Interstate Park.
In the 20th century, the completion of the Tappan Zee Bridge in 1955 transformed Rockland County into a commuter suburb of New York City, spurring rapid population growth. Today, Rockland is celebrated for its extraordinary cultural and religious diversity — it is home to large Orthodox Jewish, Haitian, and Central American communities, among many others — making it one of the most demographically complex and vibrant counties in the entire state.
What Rockland County, NY Is Known For
Rockland County offers a remarkable blend of Hudson River beauty, Revolutionary War history, world-class parks, vibrant arts, and extraordinary cultural diversity.
Nyack — Arts Village & Edward Hopper Birthplace
Nyack is one of the Hudson Valley's most beloved riverfront villages, famous for its antique shops, galleries, eclectic restaurants, and vibrant arts community. It is the birthplace of American realist painter Edward Hopper, whose childhood home is now a celebrated cultural landmark and education center.
Harriman State Park
Shared with neighboring Orange County, Harriman State Park covers over 47,000 acres of forested Ramapo highlands. With more than 200 miles of hiking trails, dozens of lakes, and sweeping Hudson Valley vistas, it is one of the most visited state parks in the entire country.
Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site
The site of General Anthony Wayne's daring 1779 midnight assault on the British garrison at Stony Point, one of the boldest American tactical victories of the Revolution. Today the battlefield park offers trails, a lighthouse, and sweeping views of the Hudson River.
Palisades Interstate Park & Hook Mountain
The dramatic Palisades cliffs line Rockland's eastern edge above the Hudson River, preserved through one of America's earliest conservation campaigns. Hook Mountain State Park offers stunning river panoramas, migratory hawk watching, and access to the Long Path hiking trail.
Tappan & Major John Andre's Execution
The hamlet of Tappan preserves one of the Revolution's most haunting chapters. Major John Andre, the British spy caught in the Benedict Arnold conspiracy, was tried and hanged here in 1780. The DeWint House — where Washington stayed during the affair — is one of the oldest surviving structures in Rockland County.
Ramapo Mountains & the Appalachian Trail
The Ramapo Mountains form Rockland County's rugged northwestern spine, crossed by the Appalachian Trail as it winds through the Ramapo Reservation. The area offers some of the most accessible backcountry hiking in the entire New York metropolitan region.
Woodbury Common Premium Outlets Vicinity
Rockland County sits at the gateway to Woodbury Common Premium Outlets in neighboring Orange County — one of the world's highest-grossing outlet centers. Communities like Suffern and Airmont serve as convenient bases for outlet shoppers, and Rockland's own retail corridors draw visitors from across the tri-state area.
Extraordinary Religious & Cultural Diversity
Rockland County is nationally recognized for its remarkable religious and cultural diversity. It is home to large Orthodox and Hasidic Jewish communities (including New Square, Kaser, and Monsey), thriving Haitian and Caribbean populations in Spring Valley, and Central American communities throughout the county — making it one of the most diverse places in New York State.
